How to Make Cloth Buttons

Buttons have been documented in Europe starting back to the first half of the 13th century gradually supplanting the brooch. Cloth buttons are one of those dress features that can make a well made garment look all the better and can be used on the sleeves as well as main body. Besides, they help you find a use for some of your scrap fabric.

In this video, Julie Eason with How To History shows her method for making cloth buttons by starting with a round cloth patch and sewing it into a small pouch to make a smaller round and then repeating to create a tightly bundled button.

I’ve made cloth buttons, but didn’t know about the sewer’s knot. Thanks!
