Here’s a simple decorative blacksmithing technique that takes a piece of square stock and puts a lovely twist in the middle. Blacksmiths use twists for all sorts of historical projects like candlesticks, gates, lantern hangers, door latches and more. This video shows how to work the twist by clamping the heated metal into a post vise. Using a pair of tongs, you grab onto the other end and twist the metal. You have to work quickly to take full advantage of the heat. Once the piece starts to cool, it’s tougher to manipulate.
