How to Make a Simple Cheese

Here’s a very simple way to make soft cheese at home. You won’t need rennet or any special ingredients. If you have trouble finding fresh local milk, try your local natural foods store, or ask your grocer if they know any dairy farms nearby.

1 quart fresh, local whole milk

1 cup active-culture buttermilk

2 tsp lemon juice or white vinegar, more if needed

3/4 tsp salt, or to taste

That cheese making thing is so cool. What would one need to make home made mozzarella?

Hi Mardie,
Mozzarella is fairly simple. I’ll see if I can dig up a video for you on that, too.

Hi Mardie,
We did a little research. Mozzarella appears to be a popular subject so there’s a large body to draw from and not everyone agrees. Sort of like asking how to make apple pie, there’s a lot of common elements and some variations with artistic flair. We’ve posted a video of the general process but now we’re hungry.
